Buildings and building services are becoming increasingly smarter in order to meet high environmental demands and client requirements. The building process is becoming more complicated and the number of parties involved is growing. This requires smart use of ICT resources to improve how we manage the process and new data analysis techniques to make better informed decisions. We therefore focus on two innovation areas: the digital building process (BIM, simulation and monitoring tools and visualisation possibilities (AR/VR)), and the digital building model (data analysis and machine learning).
From knowledge to innovations
We invest heavily in research, both in the national and international context. We work closely with knowledge and educational institutions and we offer internship opportunities for students studying at universities like Eindhoven University of Technology, Erasmus University and TU Delft. Successfully applied innovations are translated into new services. In this way, we ensure proper implementation and upscaling. Two of our success stories are evidence-based design and performance-based design.
Current innovation projects
INSITER
How do you close the gap between the intended quality in the design phase of a building and the actual quality? This is the key question that DWA, in a consortium of 14 European parties, is working on. INSITER opts for an innovative route: employees from construction and installation companies receive tools for self-instruction during the construction and for self-inspection. DWA focuses specifically on the technical installations and energy systems of a building.

TRECO-office
TRECO-office is a research project that wants to get a grip on the actual energy consumption of office buildings. There is often a gap between what the design forecasts and what is actually measured. This is a significant bottleneck when guaranteeing performance.
TRECO-office wants to close that gap. Unknown user behaviour, failing building services and a changing outdoor climate are all factors that play a role.
Together with TRECO-office, DWA has taken major steps to close the gap between prognoses and actual performance. Evidence-based design using data-driven simulations in combination with machine learning all play an important part.
